In our Christian family we have been fortunate enough to call Al & Betty Lou Bennett grandparents.
For years, we have not only listened to but also watched them progress through their journey as missionaries.
Most people in their mid-seventies are well into retirement by now. Not this couple, they are missionaries working diligently to reach the end of their lives with an “empty tank of gas”. They have often referred to it as their 2nd career. They began around age 50 and have been doing that ever since.
In our life we all have people that give us advice they themselves never live out. How much weight does that have in your life? Al & Betty Lou are two of the few people in our lives that have truly acted on the change they wanted to become and are called to be in this world.
Jesus calls us to set an example
The more and more I read my bible the more I realize just how important it is that we set an example, not just for our children, but for the people watching us. Jesus asks us to do that in Matthew, and I doubt he was saying it lightly.
Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
I have been FAR from a good example in my life, but I know there are watching eyes–most of which are my five little girls. I am praying that God will continue to mold me into who He would have me be.
Most memorable quote from the “G’parents”
You’ve tried it your way, now try it My (God’s) way.
Al told me that a preacher told him that one time in his life. Al said that he spent most of his life trying things his way, then finally decided to try it God’s way and has never looked back since. Man, how I desire to say the same thing in years to come.
Well, we are following suit. Oh how I have tried things “Nick’s way”… My wife is amazing at following God; not the case with me. I tend to think “my way” is the “right way”. Anyone else fall into that trap?
We only have a glimpse of what it could be like truly following God with our lives, but each day is a step in faith to live that out.
Thank you Al & Betty Lou for setting such a phenomenal example. You will probably not think you did much, but we would like to respectfully disagree!
